Canada 2002 TJ Sport NV3550 Rattle with Clutch out

Just purchased a very Nice 2202 TJ 157k perfect Body Condition and runs well so far.

There is a Rattle coming from the Transmission that the local transmission mechanic thought was a throw out bearing. It seems though that there are a few posts and even a magazine article that talks about a Transmission rattle in alot of TJ's and it is Normal.

Anyone have a similar rattle in Neutral ? If you push the clutch in fully, the noise dissappears. I would be interested in anyone who has always or has had for a long time this rattle. If someone could post a sound clip or video of a similar noise coming from thier TJ that would be great.

hate to spend money on something that was Normal and find out it comes back after the work.

i have an 04 tj and it does it also. for the cost of a bearing, i will do the work and be done with it.
i have owned it almost a year, but have not drove it that much. the sound has not gotten any worse. it has other sounds that concern me more
does yours squeel like a wheel bearing in the front till it warms up, and most notably in cooler temps? i shook the wheel, and checked the spin. even checked temp after a longer time on the highway. nothing is unusual, except the noise

Mine does it too, 06 with 50K,

I am a journeyman auto tech, I'm not worried about it. Drives me nuts though.

Mine has really notchy shifting in lower temps too, yours do that too?

if i dont let the engine warm up till rpm drop, the engine races every time i push the clutch in to shift. resulting in a bad shift for about 15 to 20 min till engine is real warm.
as long as the engine is warm, everything is ok with the transmition, except the throw out bearing

I've got an '03 with 139 K and it's been making the same noise ever since I bought it a few months ago.

hi,
2005 tj with 50k and I have a screech just after i release from shifting gear. just a couple of seconds.
The noise is a early warn throw out bearing. If you pay a garage to go in there you gatta do the clutch and the bearing or save $100 on the bearing and the noise will stay.

The noise you hear with the clutch out in neutral is the reverse idler gear running free on its shaft. This noise is normal and can not be fixed. Its the nature of the beast.I have been rebuilding trannys for 15 years..Hope that helps.
