Come at it from the inside, top down. I think the gear shifter is just
loose at the top cover.

This is an extremely common thing to happen, on any vehicle with a top of
transmission floor shift and some age.

Boy! that reminds me of a story
Way back when my first Jeep (an 88YJ 4.2L) was new.
My girlfriend "at the time" who had a vicious temper,
Whenever she got mad at me she would take it out on my
poor Jeep. Once she grabbed the shift lever and with both feet
on the side of the seat she yanked and pulled trying
to rip it out (the lever) it seems. After she settled down
I went to look to see what damage was done. It was well
stuck but after some muscle it popped back in place and worked
O.K. ever since. Poor ol' Jeep...It had quite a few battle scars from
her, horrifying at the time but funny as hell now :-)
