This one's got around 175k on it. I suppose a master rebuild kit is
not out of the question, although it's not given any trouble up to
now, nor did it whine or make any funny noises before 5th let go.

As a truck driver I can relate... I don't mind driving 4000 kms/ week while
getting paid but I'll be damned if I'm going to drive 300 kms up to the
cottage on the weekend... my wife does all the "free" mileage while I sleep.

getting paid but I'll be damned if I'm going to drive 300 kms up to the

That 4 banger trans is the weakest one that Jeep ever used. You can put the
5spd from behind a 4.0L and get a big improvement. There are several
transmissions that you can drop in that are better than the stock trans.
