I carry the ultimate solution...
When the engine dies and the battery breaks or my Warn XD9000i smokes
out, the trusty 'come-A-long' comes out from behind the seat and out I
go....
(that is a hand cable winch, eh)

Ummm, not quite Nathan. Amperage makes no difference in this situation. 12
volts is 12 volts and if presented with a low enough resistance (which fresh
water is not) will draw excess current. Now if we were dunking these items
in saltwater it might be a different story.
