I have used the B & M "stacked plate" coolers on a couple of vehicles
and have been very happy with the results. They are much more
efficient than your typical looped tube cooler. I would install the
biggest one that will fit if you do serious off-roading. You can
always slip a piece of sheet metal or cardboard over it in winter. or
better yet - install a thermal bypass valve and it will self regulate.
Overcooling the tranny fluid in winter is NOT desireable, since
condensation in the fluid won't burn off and you may get corrosion.
Summit Racing is a great source and you will then get their _very_
cool big (non-Jeep) catalog every month.

I couldn't find a thermal bypass valve at the Summit website, but it's
in their catalog for sure.

Re: Will a Cherokee tranny cooler fit a TJ?
Thanks for the reply. I don't tow anything, but because our tracks are
mostly sand and mud/clay which means some extensive revving that generates
heat in the transmission. I have noticed lately that as we are moving
towards summer months (I know it sounds weird), about halfway through the
day I can feel considerable heat coming up from the sides of the TJ
(generally transmission area).
I was purely thinking of adding an auxiliary cooler to prolong my tranny
life by avoiding any potential boiling of transmission oil. A unit for 24k
GVW does sound like an overkill.

Re: Will a Cherokee tranny cooler fit a TJ?
Thanks. I don't have it in my hands, but I can go to a shop and try it for
size. May be I should add a gauge before adding the cooler to see how hot
it actually does get. If it is excessive, then get the cooler.
Thanks.

Re: Will a Cherokee tranny cooler fit a TJ?
Thanks. I don't have it in my hands, but I can go to a shop and try it for
size. May be I should add a gauge before adding the cooler to see how hot
it actually does get. If it is excessive, then get the cooler.
Thanks.
