Re: Who was it that said I didn't need lockers...?

You'll still need snatch straps and tow hooks, front and rear. The winch
is not always the best answer, or the most convenient. On those downhills,
use engine braking whenever you can: 4wd Low and 1st gear. Using the
vehicle brakes by themselves is begging for a rollover.
Don't go wheeling alone (by "alone" I mean with just your CJ.) It's best to
have a couple of other vehicles with you. If you had rolled on that hill
and both been injured, you would probably still be there.
Tell the lunch ladies that it's not mud, you had a scary ride! LOL
Lose the rope with the hooks. They have been known to be lethal!

Flying down the hill is a very bad plan, and one that should be avoided at
all costs. Well, not all costs, but most of them. You should let off the
brakes, but leave the clutch alone.

My brother's wife's brother (my sister in law's brother) did what you did,
he pressed the clutch in and coasted down the hill, then he dumped the
clutch while the CJ was careening down the hill. The result was a broken
clutch and he had to drive home without benefit of his clutch.

You NEVER want to loose control while offroading, the results can be deadly
to you, or (even worse) innocent bystanders.

NEVER EVER roll backwards down on a dead engine a hill because the brakes
are not going to help you very much. What you should do instead is to shift
into R (while the vehicle is standing and the engine is stalled), then start
IN GEAR, or drive down on the starter motor hoping the engine doesn't fire.
If the engine fires, GENTLY use the brakes but do not depress the clutch
until you get out of trouble. It is better to stall the motor again because
you are using the brakes in over-time mode than to depress the clutch and
have the front brakes lock and take away your ability to steer. If you have
to, bring the vehicle to a stop, and shift into LO range, then restart the
motor in R, or continue on the starter motor with the trans in R.

You need a winch more than lockers :-) Talk to Joshua about what sort of
winch capacity you should be considering. <hehehe> Those lockers will not
prevent you from getting stuck, that's STUCK, they will only make you get
stuck worse, that's STUCK WORSE.
