Who was it that said I didn't need lockers...?

I talked a buddy of mine at work into riding along for some wheelin'
today for lunch... Got way back on the trails with no problem, except
for that one hill we were going down that was so steep that the back
left tire came about 2 feet off of the ground and we almost rolled
right there....but I let off on the brakes and pushed in the clutch
and we went flying down the rest of the hill after that back tire came
slamming back down... then almost made it back out when I hit a
monster rut that was so deep... It was so deep that the right side
tires (31" truck tires) were completely under mud except for about one
inch showing at the top of each of them....the only reason it didn't
sink further was that the jeep was resting on the right side of its
body. I tried for about 15 minutes to get out but it was *s.t.u.c.k*
STUCK. Called the wife and she came out in the 2WD Ford pickup and
was unable to pull me out so got her to take my friend Joe and I back
to work where his shiny new 2003 Chevy 4WD truck was. Got him to take
it offroad for the first time. He was able to pull me out in 4WD
high, without even going to low which is a good thing since he didn't
know how to put his truck in 4WD-low. D'oh! Of course the wife got
pissed at me that she had to take time off of her schedule to help me
out so I promised her it'll never happen again. I found a Ramsey
8000# winch that I'm buying on my credit card this Friday. Damn, I
have mud all over the seat of my pants where I fell down on the trail
while hooking up a rope. The "ladies" in the cafeteria at work were
laughing at me over it. Good excuse to go home early? :-)

Yeah I have seen that in your pictures( http://jeepadventures.dyndns.org/jeep/paint/13.jpg), and surprised no one has yelled at you for it. I see that it has
metal hooks, that is a BIG NO-NO! They have been known to become
missile if the rope/strap ever breaks.

I just ordered an 8000# Ramsey winch for it that will be replacing
that rope. But thanks for the tip. :-)

If you think a locker would have got you out, you need to learn the
brake pedal method!

If you bang the brake pedal down when one wheel is turning, the brake
will stop that wheel and transfer the torque to the other side.

This trick works great and is as old as the model T.....

Re: Who was it that said I didn't need lockers...?

You'll still need snatch straps and tow hooks, front and rear. The winch
is not always the best answer, or the most convenient. On those downhills,
use engine braking whenever you can: 4wd Low and 1st gear. Using the
vehicle brakes by themselves is begging for a rollover.
Don't go wheeling alone (by "alone" I mean with just your CJ.) It's best to
have a couple of other vehicles with you. If you had rolled on that hill
and both been injured, you would probably still be there.
Tell the lunch ladies that it's not mud, you had a scary ride! LOL
Lose the rope with the hooks. They have been known to be lethal!

Flying down the hill is a very bad plan, and one that should be avoided at
all costs. Well, not all costs, but most of them. You should let off the
brakes, but leave the clutch alone.

My brother's wife's brother (my sister in law's brother) did what you did,
he pressed the clutch in and coasted down the hill, then he dumped the
clutch while the CJ was careening down the hill. The result was a broken
clutch and he had to drive home without benefit of his clutch.

You NEVER want to loose control while offroading, the results can be deadly
to you, or (even worse) innocent bystanders.

NEVER EVER roll backwards down on a dead engine a hill because the brakes
are not going to help you very much. What you should do instead is to shift
into R (while the vehicle is standing and the engine is stalled), then start
IN GEAR, or drive down on the starter motor hoping the engine doesn't fire.
If the engine fires, GENTLY use the brakes but do not depress the clutch
until you get out of trouble. It is better to stall the motor again because
you are using the brakes in over-time mode than to depress the clutch and
have the front brakes lock and take away your ability to steer. If you have
to, bring the vehicle to a stop, and shift into LO range, then restart the
motor in R, or continue on the starter motor with the trans in R.

You need a winch more than lockers :-) Talk to Joshua about what sort of
winch capacity you should be considering. <hehehe> Those lockers will not
prevent you from getting stuck, that's STUCK, they will only make you get
stuck worse, that's STUCK WORSE.

You need a winch more than lockers :-) Talk to Joshua about what sort of
winch capacity you should be considering. <hehehe> Those lockers will not
prevent you from getting stuck, that's STUCK, they will only make you get
stuck worse, that's STUCK WORSE.

I tried that tirck. I tried lightly applying pressure the the brakes,
I tried slamming the brake a few times, tried the emergency brake to
load the back wheel that was spinning , tried rocking back and forth,
tried turning the wheel from side to side to get traction on the front
tire that was slipping, tried pushing it, pulling it, having my friend
jump up and down on the back of the Jeep above the spinning tire (and
he weighs close to 300 pounds), tried prying one side up with a long
metal tube we found, tried jamming a huge tree branch under each of
the back wheels, tried praying to God, tried cussing...a LOT... It
was STUCK-DIDDLY-UCK, dude. I think lockers would have helped but I'm
not positive I would have gotten out even with them.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. It was a semi-panic thing. The hill
wasn't very big, though, so we only "flew" down it for about 7-8 feet
before the front tires reached bottom.

I sure don't. Believe me, there were no bystanders in this case. :-)

If the pedal hit didn't transfer power, you need to check the back
brakes for adjustment and shoe wear.

Actually, the T was a pretty awesome vehicle. Considering its low power and
2wd, it could go places that most of today's cars would be hard pressed to
follow. People used them very much like people used the post war jeeps...
