So regearing, say, from 4.10's to 4.88's would actually make me move slower
on the highway?!?

Hi Eric,
If you have to ask, you probably couldn't feel it. Where it's
noticeable is on hard acceleration, say your wound out in third gear
with 4.10 at four grand, shift to fourth and drop a grand, you're still
in your engine's power range, where that shift with 4.88s may drop two
grand and begin to lug your engine outside it's power range.
(exaggeration) That's why cars that have lower gear ratios for quicker
accelerations from zero, like the Corvette will have close ratio (2.20
low) transmissions, trying to keep their five hundred horse power at
maximum power.

If you have to ask, you probably couldn't feel it. Where it's
noticeable is on hard acceleration, say your wound out in third gear
with 4.10 at four grand, shift to fourth and drop a grand, you're still
in your engine's power range, where that shift with 4.88s may drop two
grand and begin to lug your engine outside it's power range.
(exaggeration) That's why cars that have lower gear ratios for quicker
accelerations from zero, like the Corvette will have close ratio (2.20
low) transmissions, trying to keep their five hundred horse power at
maximum power.
