Jeep did the same thing when they first specified GL-5 75W-90 gear lube
for the AX-5 and AX-15 transmissions. It later came out that the
sulphur-based additives that made it GL-5 was bad for the synchros.
Jeep later changed the spec to GL-3 75W-90 but didn't feel it was
warranted to tell anyone with manuals that specified GL-5.

The 247 is a full-time t-case. I removed the front shaft on a '99 WJ
when the CV in the shaft lost it's grease and the thing started to
rattle. It drove just fine. Mileage went up .5 mpg or so before I
put in a greaseable u-joint shaft.
But with the wrong lube in the t-case, I don't know if any damage to
the t-case will be avoided by removing the front shaft.
