yea, I kept the expedition because I paid for it mysef, the Tahoe was a
company vehicle that got handed down to me. When I sold it the company got
the money. I like the ford it just fine, but all vehicles are hard to part
with. :)

To answer your question here ... the fluid link in an automatic can
handle a high-RPM start whereas the clutch in a manual can't. With a
gas engine you need the high-RPM start because that's where the engine
gets the torque needed to move the weight of the rig. A diesel gets
its torque at lower RPMs, hence a manual there doesn't have the same
problem.
Gearing can affect the rating too. My F-150 has a 2.73 rear end and
doesn't even have a tow capacity listed in the owner's manual. My BII
has 3.73 final ratios and is rated for about double what the 3.08 in
the F-150 would be. Both are 5-speed transmissions.
Come to think of it ... the BII has the same wheelbase as the TJ (+/-
an inch or two) yet was rated to tow around 3700 lbs, IIRC. I
wouldn't be surprised if marketing and liability played a role at
least as significant as physics and engineering in determining the
ratings.
