TJ doesnt start with a key but does with...
my remote starter.
I got in my Jeep yesterday, inserted the key, turned it and...NOTHING.
Battery was not dead because all of my electronics work and my battery gauge
reads full charge. I proceeded to turn the key to the off position, then
tried to start it again...NOTHING...and what I mean by nothing is, no noise,
no activity, nothing (I did this several times).
So I decided to call my dad, he's a GM guy and knows vehicles more than
anyone I know. As I was talking to him, I pushed the two buttons on my
remote that causes my Jeep to "remote start". IT STARTED UP!! What the
heck?? I didnt chance turning it off again, so I drove home to do some
troubleshooting. It continues to start up with my remote starter but not a
key?!
Does anyone have a clue? Maybe a bad ignition switch, bad ignition, etc??
I have no experience with ignitions whatsoever, so I'm stumped. Thanks in
advance for your help!!

Re: TJ doesnt start with a key but does with...
Start simple. If it's standard shift, does it have a clutch safety switch? If
it's automatic, check the neutral/park switch. You can eliminate starter,
solenoid, battery and cables. Also could be the ignition switch. I don't think
the remote start would interupt that. But if you have a burgler alarm it could
be at fault.

Talk with the people that sold and installed the after market
alarm. It's one of their relays.
