That must be an impossible job to 'well tune' them then because they are
the stinkiest and sootiest things on the road.

It is impossible to follow a Canadian transit bus with a top down Jeep.
You will fast get gassed out or smoked out or sooted out or smogged out
or whatever you want to call it, it is just downright nasty.

Yeah, they have those in small passenger cars in Europe. I don't know about
mileage, maintenance or dependability, but they smell bad and they are loud
too. The only thing worse, are the scooters that sound like a chain saw or
a string trimmer. Gasoline is damn expensive here, and lots of people still
use it, even in trucks. There must be a reason.
