If you can keep the idle tubes clear, it runs great. I highly recommend
reaming out the crimped end on the idle tubes like in this link:

I used welding torch tip tools to do mine and it really helped.

That's true, but I think the real problem is the way the carb is laid out.
Anything that gets into a BBD always seems to find it's way to the idle tubes.
The Motorcraft 2100/2150 used on the V8s has idle tubes with holes as small as
those in the BBD, but rarely have an idle problem because some little piece of
crap made it into an idle tube. Even with all kinds of crap lying in the bottom
of the float bowl.
