My experience with Castrol Syntec has been favorable. The valve train looks
nice and clean. A little buildup here and there, but that's expected. I think
the ZJ needs the vent hose cleaned.

Re: Synthetic Oils
I just bought my JGC at the beginning of the year and it had 84K miles. I
wanted to switch to synthetic but was worried because I heard rumors of
leaks. I could not find any documentation or articles to support this,
however. I checked out all of the major manufactures of synthetics including
Mobil 1 to see what they had to say about using it in high mileage vehicles.
Every site I checked indicated there are no problems with using fully
synthetic oils in high mileage vehicles and claim that it will not harm
seals, etc.
I decided to give Mobil 1 a try since I have heard it is the best synthetic.
I have been getting it at the local Sam's Club for $25/case and have been
very pleased. I have noticed less rough idle, easier starts and marked
increase in performance, especially on the take-off. I have had no problems
in the 10K miles I have put on my Jeep this year and plan to keep using it.

That only applies to cork gaskets or engines with real bad wear.

If you did have older cork or small leaks just replace one quart of syntetic
with a quart of dino.

I use Castrol Syntec, but Mobile is good too.

Doug, that's no longer needed. Synthetics no longer have that problem since
an additive has been present in them for some time that causes the seals to
swell just like they did with dino/mineral-based oil. I don't run
synthetics myself so I'm not defending them, just passing on what I learned
a year or two ago. :)

Interesting. I went with pure synthetic an haven't had any problems. Not sure
if it's worth the $. Anyhoo, thanks for the info.

Local jeep service manager claims same as Jerry, the new synths
don't tend to leak, but if they do, just add a bit of Marvel
to them rather than dino. Not that it hurt anything to add
dino. I use the Castrol Syntec as well, it appears to come
up to pressure earlier and also keeps pressure up when crawling
in triple digit heat.
PS. Whoever you are in the Four Corners Area that has been
keeping that damn high pressure area for the past couple weeks
that is making the entire western usa a sauna, feel free to
let it move out any old time....

I've personally used Mobil 1 in all of my "good" vehicles for many years and
I can say I have had extremely good results with it. I've used it in 5
vehicles including my race car, a turbocharged 4 cylinder Dodge Shelby
Charger, a couple 4x4's, and a heavily modified Chevy 350 in an S10 pickup.
No complaints here.

Re: Synthetic Oils Mobile 1 ?
From what I know.....
If you use dino oil in your car for many years, the dino oil will get into
cracks and seals and seal up leaks. Then you switch to synth oil, which has
a higher detergent or cleaning factor and it cleans out that dino oil that
used to seal up leaks. Now you got leaks.... I have seen this happen on a
car. A person I know used dino oil to 80,000 miles and then switched to
sythn, the engine started leaking and everything went downhill from there.

Re: Synthetic Oils
Engine synthetic is good, keep an eye on leaks and weeps.
Tranny, stay away from syn in the auto's, mixed jury there, some reported
big time problems after the change, others no problems.
The AX-15 requires GL3, NOT GL5 or GL2,3,4,5,6, etc 'one size fits all'
lube. Has to do with sulpher content and the sintered parts that are used
in it. Dealer has a specific GL3 just for the AX15, and its friggin
expensive too... That said I switched to Mobil-1 gear oil in my 98XJ,
5speed, NP231 when it was new, it now has over 180,000mi on it with no
problem but I'm an easy driver, shift very easy, leakage out of my
transfer cases rear seal keeps that area rust free and the underbody well
lubricated. I add about 3oz's maybe every 4 months.
As for a study, I do not know if it is still there but Carnagie Mellon
Univ did a syn study on, IIRC, 6 identical motors. It was interesting
because at the end of the study the engines run on synthetic had no
measureable wear on the parts.

Okay. It's currently not leaking or weeping so it should be okay. I want
to use Mobil1 like I do with my VW.

My owners manual states to use only Mopar Gear lub or equivalent
SAE 75W-90 API-GL5 grade. I guess this means that I do not have the AX-15
tranny. I would use Redline MT-90 but it's only 75W-90 GL4 lube. This is
what I currently use in my VW. However Redline does have 75W-90 GL5
synthetic gear oil which fits the specs. I wonder...

I like synthetic over dino myself. This is my first Jeep even though it's
quite used but it is fun to drive.

No slush boxes here.
