Starter getting slower
When I start my 98 TJ Sport these days, it makes the "starter noise"
about 5 or 6 times before it actually starts. Usually it would start
after one iteration. The battery is only a year old, although I
haven't attached a multi-meter to see if this could be an alternator
issue or battery issue. Typically does a bad starter going bad
perform as above?
Thanks,
Chuck

Re: Starter getting slower
Hi Chuck,
I'm not clear on what "starter noise" is. Is it spinning the engine
at normal starting speed, but the engine doesn't start? Like the fuel
pressure has bleed off and it takes up to six primes of the pump as they
automatically shut off with no start, before it's fueled. Or does it
grind very slowly, like a weak battery or tired motor? Or do you just
hear the whir of the motor without flywheel engagement, like a bendix
failure. Or just the clicks from a bad solenoid without making the
starter motor connection until the sixth time? Maybe, one of your tests
should be to jump with another battery to eliminate a weak or under
charged battery. The volt meter should read twelve volts at the battery,
then at least fourteen when the engine's running.

Re: Starter getting slower
What Bill says with an add on. If the battery connections are dirty,
the starter can take all the available power not leaving enough to fire
up the computer or injectors.
