As long as Stoddard Solvent, K-1 Kerosene, and many other fluids are
around gasoline is ultra-stupid as a cleaning solvent. Not is it only
WAY too flammable it isn't even all that good! The most volatile parts
evaporate too soon and leave the dirt only slightly displaced.
Dry cleaning fluid was "the ----" but unless you marry into a Korean
dry cleaning family, it's unobtanium now.
That said I _do_ use gasoline for one or two particular jobs-but
outside, wearing full fire coveralls, and with an assistant with a BIG
fire extinguisher standing by. The parts stay outside a full 24 hours
"no matter what" and are then solvent cleaned.

The point is, one, the propane company shouldn't be held responsible
for the above conflagrations of stupidity, and two, MOST people in the
United States today are too stupid to work with ANY fuel. If you are
willing to learn to correctly flare tubing and put fittings on hose and
take the time to pressure test your work you can do propane motor
vehicle work. If you can't , gasoline might just let you get away with
wrongdoing a little longer. If the propane job blows up, it's because
propane is no good: if the gas job blows up they blame the installer,
not the fuel.
Propane engines are a bunch of fun to work with when they work right.
The induction system is simple, and you get around the EPA and State
eco-***** in most cases. The deal-killer behind performance propane has
been the higher-than-gasoline fuel cost, here in the US.
A lotof SCORE off road races and Pikes Peak hillclimbs have been won
on propane, but they keep that part quiet.

Yeah, last time I bought propane it was $1.50 a gallon. If it stays at that
level through this heating season you may have a convert. I don't have the
numbers handy, but the octane equivalent of propane is supposed to be pretty
good too.

Re: Slant Six in Jeep?
You can bet propane will follow other petroleum products as supply
dictate the price. San Diego has had an new home moratorium on natural
gas for over twenty years as our supply dwindles, so many of the three
thousand homes that burned in our last fire had propane missiles.
Propane had a surprising higher BTU, and an octane of a hundred and
thirty, while it last.
