Several years back, my wife had to take some courses to complete her
qualifcations for teaching elemetary school in Texas. I was stationed
in Del Rio at the time, she is a native of Colorado Springs. When she
went looking for some place to pick up the required courses, she lit
upon Sul Ross and decided that this was just the place for her - she
missed the mountains and Alpine, Texas sounded attractive. Being a
quick study on this married gig, I bit my tongue and agreed to drive
her out there so she could check it out. Realize, now, that I was
brought up in West Texas - but Alpine is in the middle of nowhere even
for us Texans. OK, we drove into town after a couple of hundred miles
of nothing and I will never forget the look on her face. "Where's the
mountains?" she asked and I obligingly pointed to the rockpiles rising
all of a couple hundred feet. Never heard another word about going to
Sul Ross...
