Regearing
I have been considering moving up to 33's (means I'd need a bigger lift.. oh
darn), but know that would likely require regearing if I want to ever drive
on the highway. I'm not sure what regearing does, exactly, and thought I
would ask you guys.
I have 4.11s and figured I would go to 4.56s. Would having 4.56s merely
raise my RPMs at a given speed in the same gear? I.e. at 60 mph in 5th gear
with 4.11s, I may be turning 2700 RPMs. At 60 mph in 5th gear with 4.56s,
would I just be turning higher RPMs?? If so, what is the benefit? What not
just use 4th gear?
I'm sure there is more to it than that, but before I invest in it, I want to
get all the facts. Thanks guys!

Hi Eric,
You could do that, you'd be turning twenty five hundred in forth
gear with 33": http://www.dirtroad.com/gears.htm Less wear on everything
in direct, and just forget about the overdrive. Of course you've lost a
forward speed, unless you're traveling down hill with a tail wind.

Re: Regearing
Hi Eric,
I assume you have the 4 cyl.? You would have to re-gear to get the torque
required to turn the bigger/heavier 33's. The bigger tire you put on the
less effective your 5th gear becomes at highway speed. And yes you could
just use 4th, but most people like to maintain use of all (5) transmission
gears. If you don't re-gear, you will notice a difference pulling out in
1st . Depending on your long range plans, 4.56 may not be enough (again
assuming 4 cyl.).

With the 4 banger in a TJ, most people are going straight to the 4.88s when they go to 33s.
The whole idea with re-gearing is to get your rpms back to as close to what they were with stock tires (in the Ses case 27 inch tires). If you were to go to 33s without re-gearing to a lower ratio (numerically higher) you will have a harder time getting the tires to turn and to maintain
their momentum. If yo talk to guys that have gone to 33s without re-gearing (especially the guys with the 4bangers) they'll tell you tha they have to let the clutch slip a little more when they're starting off (not good for clutch parts) and that they can't use 5th gear anymore. Especially on the inclines.
You're in the same boat I'm in. My wife has 98 SE and she desperately wants a lift with 33s. But this is her daily driver (on the highway to work) so there's no way I'm putting 33s on it without re-gearing to 4.88s. We put 30 inch tires on it 2 years ago and it sucks the bag when it comes to highway travels. Zero passing power without down shifting into 4th and reving the ---- out of it to 4 grand to pass anyone and gas mileage is terrible now.
Btw, if you're going to re-gear anyway, seriously look at replacing the D35 rear axle with a Ford 8.8 or D44. Even a mildly driven/off-roaded 4 banger with 33s will grenade a D35. Especially if you put a locker in it.
Btw, you didn't mention if you have the 5 spd or the automatic tranny. I'm told that the 4.88s are good for the 5 spd, while the 4.56s are better for the auto.
