metal stuff, I take it to the scrap yard and get the cost of my petrol back.

Here on the other side of the Great Pond, it depends on where you live and
the local regulations. Some municipalities will happily pick up whatever
you put on the curb -- if only to save money by not having to pick it up
from some back country roadside where it was dumped. Some will take the
material if you bring it to a central recycling station, some want you to
pay money to drop it off. It all depends on which color bug crawled up
whose **** and what they consider to be "cost" and "saving money". In my
area as of a few months ago scrap iron prices were so low that I'd have to
pay a local boneyard to take a Jeep carcass off my hands -- and more if I
couldn't offer them a clear title.
