OT local regs
my trip to montana (less than a week away now) will take me from north
carolina through virginia, west virginia, kentucky, indiana, illinois,
wisconsin, minnesota, north dakota, and then montana. im wondering if there
are any regulations that i need to be aware of concerning transporting
handguns and assault rifles through these states.
thanks!

Don't get caught?
I don't know, but the opportunity to be a smart *** was just too strong. I
think I would put them all in the back of your truck with the sofa and
chairs. Carry your ownership papers with you in the cab. Good luck, and
don't get caught.

Re: OT local regs
I think you will be safe if you keep the weapons in a locked case & the ammo
in a separate part of the vehicle (weapons in a locked case - locked in the
trunk & ammo in a locked case in the back seat.
I will check with the guy that qualified me for my CCW & get an opinion of
state by state

Re: OT local regs
Nathan,
In WI, we have no conceal carry laws as of yet. Transportation of guns means
they must be FULLY cased. I have an Encore in an Uncle Mikes holster that
leaves the but end visible. That is illegal, so I transport it in a hard
sided.briefcase style. All must be unloaded and not readily accessible. For
more info, try the WI Legislature chapter 167.31 linked below.

Re: OT local regs
It all boils down to not getting caught...
On the other hand, if you really are worried about getting caught, pack them
away in something that is locked and not visible... The cops do not have the
right to search your car unless they are arresting you for something... In
actuality, they can't just do a search then, but they call it "inventorying"
your car... It's basically an illegal search, but it won't do you any good
to fight it... The gun laws are considerably different as you go across the
country... Personally, I believe that one should learn the laws so that they
know exactly which ones that they are breaking... When I go across country,
I carry since I have a Texas CHL... I don't care if the state that I'm in
recognizes the TX CHL or not... I tend not to have states that don't
recognize it as the destination for my trip, but some of the ones that I go
through might not recognize it... Then again, I'm only out of my car long
enough to get gas in these states...

Serious? Yeah, kinda. I think I would do as you are doing, packing my stuff
and moving from one state to another. It so happens that part of "my stuff"
includes an arsenal that small countries would be proud of. As long as you
are not engaged in a crime spree with your wife and kids in tow, I don't
think you have any real worries. When you get to your new home, it would be
wise to bone up on the local laws as they might apply to your arsenal, but I
really don't see any problems for you.
Since I would do as you are doing, good luck. Remember your 2nd Amendment
right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Keep your stuff in the
back with the sofa and chairs, and you should be fine. Don't do anything
that would make anybody want to ask questions.

Re: OT local regs
Even if I were driving through New York I would still have my
loaded firearm next to me, especially New York. It is better to be
judged by twelve of my peers, than carried by six.
