But they still market them as synthetics. The performance difference
between quality hydrocracked and true synthetic based oils appears to be
minimal.

As usually you offer no web site that will document that the
synthetic is anything other than a petroleum product. Find something, a
castor bean or whatever or admit it, rather than BS us further.

They are better than regular dead dinosaur oil yes, but I have not seen any
of them be able to withstand the rigors of extended drain intervals, as a
properly formulated PAO or diester synthetic is capable of.
