If wheelbase length is the controlling factor, it seems like there
would be a wide range of weights for different jeep wrangler-type
models. There's a pretty significant range of different lengths,
from the CJ5 on the short end to the CJ8 on the high end.

Our owners manual for our Cherokee states an automatic Cherokee can pull
5000 lb, where a 5 speed is limited to 2000 lb. Go figure?
I just know for sure that cops watch for trailers and 'will' bust you
for an overload.
Whatever you want to tow, if you are going to tow it any distance or
regularly, I recommend you check it out in an empty parking lot. Jam
the brakes on at 40 or 50 mph and see what it does.
Much safer than getting caught by surprise.
