Ours turns on at 30 mph in 4th gear so it 'must' just be pointing the
way. :-)
I believe it relies on vacuum pressure from the way it acts but could be
mistaken, if rpm were in there it wouldn't come on at 'fast idle' rpm
speeds I wouldn't think.
Ours had a vacuum front axle disconnect too and we had to futz with the
gas pedal sometimes to get it to turn off the 4x4 light and unlock.

I've followed the indicator's recomendation for ***** and giggles and
if I'm on a flat road and I don't stomp on the gas after I shift, the
engine does not lug--even when it tells me to shift at what I would
think is too low a RPM. My WAG is that it's set up for saving gas.
