Re: Michigan Jeepers Loose member to strapping accident..

Hi Gene,
Sorry, I witnessed the same thing, a tow hook kill a man at Pismo
Beach, instantly. The tow hook sheered bolts from a Dodge Power Wagon's
frame and hit the driver of the tow Jeep. The hook position, front left
behind the bumper was the same as my Bronco's stock position. I saw the
bolts, they were 9/16", but I don't remember if they were marked with a
strength rating. The strap was huge, probably a war surplus, something,
it worked great up until the accident, the little Jeep would drive out
at about five miles and hour, stretch the strap and sink, and the this
Power Wagon, and others would just pop out of the sand. We just have to
figure it was a freak accident, out of all the places that projectile
could fly, how does it find the head? But thanks for the reminder.

This is sooo sad....it breaks my heart...the tears have been shed....I don't
know the man, but is a Jeeper and means he is all our friend...

I'm a new Jeeper and our club has had many discussions on tugging and what
to use and not to use...
and I have already seen this joining two straps together by a cleavis.... I
know I will never see it again NOW....I will never let this happen in my
presence as it has really opened my eyes...

God Bless the family and friends of the deceased...
you are in our prayers....
Jeff

Re: Michigan Jeepers Loose member to strapping accident..

Very sad....

I know I have used a clevis for this purpose in the past, but recently a
wheeling buddy showed me how to use a 1.5" diameter wooden dowel to
connect 2 straps when one is not long enough. Would believe the dowel
would be the first thing to break, or if not it would not have the
weight/inertia to become a projectile.

Any one have any ideas/cautions on using this instead?
