Having trouble keeping it going
I have an 89 Jeep YJ 4.2L and I'm having a hard time keeping the engine
idling. I've rebuilt the carb and replaced a couple worn out vacuum lines. I would replace and check the locations of all the vacuum lines however the diagrams I have are not very helpful. I've checked the timing and made sure the vacuum advance mechanism is working also. I can work the idle screw so it will idle high and that helps, but then the engine RPM's are over 2K at idle. Any help would be great!! Thanks, Dwayne |

On my old C-10 I just went around and sprayed TB cleaner on every hose connection. Eventually I found two areas, one was the carb gasket and the other was the brake booster. Another worker had similar issues and it was the vacuum reservoir. His old Ford used a tin can as the reservoir and it had a hairline crack right around the seam. Grab yourself a vac gauge, they are handy for diagnosing these problems. You did say you rebuilt the carb, did you adjust the mix? Too rich/lean will also cause idle stumble. -- DougW |

http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/vacuhose.htm I had lots of the same trouble, and it was all vacuum oriented thats not to mean that yours is too, just a common problem......take the time to chase out all of your vacuum lines....that wire diagram may not be perfect, but I have the 89 and it was accurate for mine....still the 258 Dwayne Smith wrote: >I have an 89 Jeep YJ 4.2L and I'm having a hard time keeping the engine >idling.
