Full Time 4WD uses a viscous coupling to handle the differential duties, remember the differential handles the speed differences from side to side - or in the case of the tcase, front to rear. I am not aware of how Full Time 4WD is supposed to feel, but if the VC was not working properly, the result would be what you have described. In a perfect world, the VC should give you a driving experience similar to that of 2HI, but there are very few perfect things in the world. Try driving in both 2HI, making sure the shift lever is actually giving you 2HI, and pay carefull attention to what is happening relative to the symptoms you described. Do this for a week or so, making sure that nobody moves the lever. then try Full Time for a while and see if the symptoms occur. My guess is that in 2HI, you will give a clean bill of health, and you will find that Full Time causes the symptoms. Be sure to relay that to the service writers. Of course, the troulbe can still turn out to be that when shifting from Full Time back to 2HI, you pass through Part Time and the tcase is hanging up there because the linkage on the shifter is maladjusted. This is the most likely problem, quite frankly. The adjustment is easy and free to fix, and the likelihood of the getting a bad VC - while reasonably high - is just not as likely as having the linkage set up improperly. By the way you described the symptoms, I am stuck on the most likely problem being mal adjustment of the linkage to the tcase. The second problem will be the viscous coupler, the ball joints come in a distant third, but there has reportedly been a recall on them, so they could conceivably be ahead of the VC. If the trouble is the linkage, you can re-create the symptoms by playing with the shifter, and you can eliminate the symptoms by playing with the shifter just as easily. All yuou need do is pull the shifter a little further into 2HI, which is to pull the shifter a little towards 4LO. Instead of stopping as soon as you get to 2HI, pull past it, then push into 2HI.If this solves the problem, get the linkage adjusted. |

Re: A girlie Liberty question....................
I suggested pulling the shifter through 2HI and on the way to 4LO, then go
back to 2HI, but apparently this is not possible. The best you can do is pust the shifter into 2HI, then attempt to push beyond the stop just to be sure that 4HI is fully released. Best thing is for her to go back to the dealer..

Re: A girlie Liberty question....................
She's already done that. I was trying to help her do a little diagnostic
work on her own that might help her get the dealership to find the problem. I have found that the dealership is going to fix things they can actually see long before they will fix things they can not see. Part of what we are about here is helping people figure out how to open the dealership's eyes.
