A girlie Liberty question....................

..............but as I'm a girl it's allowed.

My 6 month old Liberty has develeoped an intermittent noise when turning
right (and very very occaisionally left). I can only describe it as a cross
between a grinding noise and a whine. I can feel a very slight vibration
through the steering wheel as well. Sometimes it happens a lot, then I can
go for days with nothing, I can't even figure out what brings it on. Every
time I have take in to the dealership it doesn't happen (of course!!!) even
if it has been doing it a lot that day. They say until they can hear it
they wont be able to tell what it is. Does anybody have any clues? Is this
a common Liberty problem??

Re: A girlie Liberty question....................

I am not sure if the Libby has a Full Time 4WD mode or not, but if it does
and you use it, then the trouble sounds to be related to this. If it hasn't
got, or yours does not have, Full Time 4WD but you have selected 4HI and are
driving on the street, then this IS the problem. Your Libby (assuming you
only have Part Time 4WD) is not intended to be driven in 4WD on any surface
other than SOLID SNOW OR ICE, or dirt and gravel. If there is any sign of
asphalt, then do not use 4WD.

I should have said, I am in the UK and have a 2.8 CRD which has Selec Trac.
Most of the time I keep it in 2 wheel drive, but I get the noise in 2 wheel
drive or 4 wheel full time. I've never tried it in 4 wheel part time or 4
wheel low as I've never been on the cirrect surface to try.

Power steering, CV joint.. Like the dealer says it's hard to know
without hearing it. Do you have a camcorder or tape recorder that you can
have with you?

Try "full left" and "full right" turns at various speeds.
You can also turn the wheel full to the left then press a little further
(that will make the power steering pump hiss and is normal, just don't
do it for more than a second or two) Then try again to the right.

Re: A girlie Liberty question....................

I agree with Mark, get your brakes looked at.

As a test, try using the brakes when you have the trouble, and see if the
trouble changes, or use thebrakes when you don't have the trouble and see if
you can get it to start.

You have to figure out when the trouble comes on, then figure out a way to
cause it, then you can demonstrate it for the mechanic. It is especially
helpful if the trouble is noticable by the passenger, then you can ride
along and give instructions on how to cause it, and verify that your
instruction worked.

A dry ball joint on a brand new Libby? While anything is possible, unless
there is a recall specifically for ball joints I seriously doubt this is the
problem she is having.

Crawl up under her and check to see if a stick or something stuck in
there where the axel thingy is conected to the wheel. Front wheels
have an extra set of U-joints exposed. You do not have tumble weeds
but I am sure there is plenty of other road debris over there. It
would be unusual but not unheard of for something to get caught in
there.

While you are up under there grab the axel and see if you can twist is
by hand - actually, make sure that it does not have any play in it.
If a quick visual inspection finds nothing then take it to a dealer
pronto. My TJ started making a scraching sound at one particular
speed from the left front wheel, turned out to be a bearing.

Regularly spend time under your four wheel drive. Any time it is in a
shop and up on a lift give the undersides a good visual inspection.
It is kinda fun. Enjoy your Liberty!

I'd tend to agree with what Doug mentioned below, could be normal, if
you are talking about what he posted;

Or if you don't believe this is the issue then ask to go with the
technician on a test drive of your vehicle, see if you can point out
the noise to him, unroll the windows on the drive and make sure to do
the turns on a test drive and in a parking lot...
