I like the Weber replacement carburetor for the old Rambler
engines, and they really make the trick VW 2180 cc and larger come to
life, but like your Italians, it takes a Holley to bet a Holley, and
it's the only thing used in Pro Stock drag racing:

Webers, that were popular when I was in high school, in the
fifties, were the 58 mm side drafts and 48 mm down drafts:

in Florence, thinking I could represent their company and maybe they
would give me a couple of the carburetors, in '66 to no avail They ran
better at the time than Hilborn mechanical injection:

Holley dominated with the 850 cfm and up double pumpers in the early
sixties:

For an inline, nothing but nothing works like the classic sidedraft
Webers. Once you set them up with the right jets, emulsion tubes and
linkage, they stay that way. And they look cool, have a lot of cool
history, and if you look carefully you can get them halfway
reasonable.

But FI is still going to have more flexibility and top end and you
keep those cylinder walls in better shape on shutdown.
