Maybe that is the cause of the trouble, the switch makers put crappy
contacts in because high wasn't a direct draw...

might be part of the problem. There may be something integral to that
switch elsewhere in the panel that's not obvious. I don't have any of
the proper diagrams so it's just pure guess work at this point.
