Engine and Tranny swap

My opinion is "How the hell can this idiot think of swapping that hydraulic
transmission for that electronic nightmare?" but I will keep such opinions
to myself. If I were to express this opinion publicly, I would no doubt get
a barrage of replies to the effect that I am anti-technology (true) and
tiresome (false).
Have you tried draining and refilling both the engine and transmission?

Here;s my situation:
I have a 95 ZJ limited with the 5.2L and 46RH tranny. What is involved
in putting in a 5.9L Magnum and 46RE tranny from a Ram? I'm assuming
they will fit, but I'll need a new computer to control the 46RE
transmission? Any insight would be appreciated!
The reason I'm replacing them is because I wound up in a puddle that
was deeper than I thought (close to 3 feet deep) and managed to flood
the engine and tranny with water, not to mention the interior of the
Jeep.
Thanks!

Thanks for calling me an idiot Earle, hope it made you feel better
about yourself. I was hoping for some insight on the situation since
I have little knowledge in this area, but instead I get people like
you. anyway...
Yes, I have heard that the RE is poor in comparison to the RH,
however, considering that I can get the pair for less than a rebuilt
46RH, I decided it was worth a shot. And I would be paying the same
amount for just the engine, or just the tranny, so I might as well get
both.
I spent a week refilling them, 5 oil changes (with filter) and
recirculated the tranny fluid til it was clear (two filter changes),
by tapping the line at the cooler and feeding fresh fluid into the
return line. The continued knocking (extremely loud) prompted me to
take it to the shop since I have little experience with internal
engine repairs, and nowhere to fix it (I'm at college). The shop
recommended a new engine and transmission. I found the 5.9L/46RE pair
for sale, and thought it might be a good solution.
I also thought of another problem, I think the parts are coming off a
2-wheel drive. This is going to cause even more problems, isn't it?
Thank you,
Don

Usenet is no place for the overly sensitive. I am trying to help. Would
you rather have someone politely give you bad advice? There are lots of
those...

The hydraulic transmission is based on an older and better tested design.
The electronic transmission is full of electronic gizmos that tend to burn
out because they don't work that well when immersed in hot oil. (They were
even worse when they first came out.) Add to this the fact that you will
have to change the computer, which is a big job and may not even be legal
according to EPA regulations if that particular combination was never used
in your model year car. The hydraulic transmission costs more because it is
worth more. That is why you should want to have it. The 36RH transmission
is even better, because it is based on the legendary 727 Torqueflite
transmission, which is right up there with the TH400 in terms of durability
and strength.

Let me get this straight. The vehicle runs but knocks. How is a new
transmission supposed to address this?

Yes, it won't work as is. The transmission can be adapted to fit your
vehicle, but this will take some skill, knowledge of which parts are needed,
and disassembly of the transmission. You start to lose the price advantage
of the engine/transmission combo that is on sale when you think about these
changes.

Thanks for your help Earle. Sounds like its not worth the effort.
The knocking I'm getting is bearing knock, or something like that,
from what the shop told me and what my mechanic friend told me, its an
expensive fix, and is better to go ahead and replace the engine since
more is likely to be wrong with it. The reason I was thinking of
buying the 5.9L with tranny is because I was looking for a cheap
replacement engine, and possibly a new tranny if mine was shot (from
what I hear, water in the tranny will kill it almost everytime). The
combo was cheaper than fixing/rebuilding/buying a rebuilt engine or
transmission (from the shop estimates) and they came as a set. I
didn't think about the 4wd until after my first post.
I'm most likely not going to buy them now, but out of curiousity,
would I have to change my computer if I put the 5.9L Magnum in? I
know they are basically the same engine, but are they similar enough
that my computer could control it? As for the heat issues with 5.9L
in ZJ's, thats another subject...
Thanks again for your help, it's appreciated.
