Nope, doesn't work in a 98 TJ - believe me, we've tried....

ahh... that explains some... Others have said yes they do, but we had a 96
Cherokee and it worked like a charm. Along came the 98TJ and it would never
work, always have to hook up to an OBDII scanner, thanks.

Hey on my 2000 TJ if you hold in the odometer reset button while turning the
ignition to on it will run through the diagnostic mode and check all the
gauges and the odometer will run through a series of numbers and then
display the error codes if one is present.
