Hi Allen,
If it ever will have to pass SMOG again, I'd keep it. The Canister
controls the gasoline vapors from the carburetor float bowl and fuel
tank via solenoid purge and positive crankcase ventilation valves:

The short answer is 'yes'. But I wouldn't. The Jeep will wreak like gasoline
and you still need a way to vent the float bowl.
