The switch can be out of adjustment or stripped so it won't stay in
adjustment. It is a cheap plastic switch. I have also heard of folks melting down the switch by using the wrong wattage of brake lights. There are 'brighter' lights available that aren't a good thing if the vehicle wasn't designed for them. Same thing goes for reverse lights. Folks put the bright bulbs in without adding a relay and they cook the $350.00 tranny switch....
