Cool, a bash dealer service thread...
A dealer service technician chipped the ring gear on my three quarter ton
Ram Van, changing the axle housing. About halfway through Idaho (a real big
state) it started singing that damaged ring and pinion song. Luckily I made
it back to Redmond, WA, so the same dealer service technician could put a
new ring and pinion, and complete set of bearings in the axle. It all
started with a wet spot where the axle tube joins the differential housing.
It would have been wiser to ignore it.

Re: Beware of Jiffy Lube
Jiffy Lube is only good for state inspections, and only then when you
can keep an eye on them.
I took my truck in to be inspected one time, and although I offered to
drive the truck into the bay they said insurance regulations required
they do it.
So while I'm watching this young black guy gets in the truck and sits
there for a minute or so looking around the cab, then he trys to start
the engine and all that happens is the truck lurches a bit because it
was in gear with the hand brake on. He sits there a little longer and
then gets out of the truck, looks at me and asks "is this your Studebaker?".
I allowed as how it was and he asked me to pull it into the bay... no
doubt he never experienced Studebakers factory installed anti theft
device before, the column stick shift <G>.
Later they asked me to open the hood, as they had to verify that all the
factory emissions equipment was still in place... on a 1960 truck!?!
The truck passed, and a year or so later, the NC Legislature in a
totally out of character common sense move passed a law exempting all
vehicles 35 years or older from inspection.
