Oh, I can see the real argument they will make: weight. Compare the
weight of an aluminum V6 to the inline 6 tractor engine. Every ounce
they cut (theoretically) will boost the gas mileage. Same
rationalization for all the plastic and little bitty gas tanks. I'm
sure that many will agree that with proper maitainance and driving
patterns we could probably do just as well but it's like the carb
engines - who knows how to really tweek a carb anymore (and I never
did find one that wasn't a running battle over time).
Functionality is the last thing on the design sheet...

I sure hope someone's left on the Jeep swb design team that can stop the
lunacy, but a good friend works fairly high up in the DC corporate world and
said some months ago there's a very good chance, despite all the eveidence
that it would be a bad move, that the IFS design will win out over the more
traditional design poposals that would keep live axles front & rear on the
TJ replacement.
We can take heart that the Rubicon was produced despite the lawyers
concerns, and that the Unlimited somehow managed to get back just a bit of
that old Scrambler vibe. DC brass should note that with the addition of the
Rubicon & Unlimited, TJ sales for this year are up 41.5% May ytd vs last
year.
Unfortunately DCs' brand management ******** point out how well the Liberty
has done vs. the old Cherokee (a no-brainer since the XJ was so long in the
tooth by the time it was replaced). They also admit few Cherokee buyers
traded for Libertys, and they don't know for sure where they went. A few
upgraded to GC, but most have disappered. There's some corporate conjecture
they've bought low mileage used Cherokees as replacements, but mosty they
conceed they've lost them to other brands.
The IFS move was a bad one for Jeep, no matter what Consumer Reports or the
"BMW is Heaven" Automotive press thinks. The loss of the Cherokee to the
Liberty fiasco, and the new Grand's awful styling & IFS design kinda show
there's some bad Ju-Ju in the water at Auburn Hills.
