They tried that for one or maybe two years in some CJ7's (82 maybe?) and
figured out it didn't work so by the 85 year 'for sure' (have the owners
manuals) they went back to recommending gear oil for it and the 86.

I even checked with my local Canadian $tealership and they stated that
'if' you have shifting problems in the winter only, you could use ATF,
but it is 'not' recommended otherwise.

I have heard of some rebuilts that insist on ATF because they couldn't
get the tolerances good enough for gear oil or some other such thing.

ATF fluid requires tigher clearances in a manual gear box not looser.
A lot of gear boxes went to ATF to slitghly reduce pumping losses to
oil in gearbox and gain a few fractions of MPG.
