95 XJ valve cover replacement
OK the wife's XJ is leaking oil, every resource I check warns you that if
the original gasket is damaged that the whole valve cover needs to be
replaced. All of the replacement valve covers that I've seen on-line have a
statement about potentially requiring drilling and tapping new holes?!!!
Where can I get a 'drop' in replacement valve cover without paying through
the nose? I figure I should just replace the whole kit and caboodle cause if
I take it off and the original gasket is damaged I am dead in the water.
thanks

Re: 95 XJ valve cover replacement
Where did you read that??? when I replaced my valve cover gasket a couple
years ago the shop used the original cover when they re-installed. The only
time I have heard of someone replacing the cover is when it was made of the
plastic stuff.

Re: 95 XJ valve cover replacement
Hi Jaco,
You must have a four banger:
http://www.rubicon4x4.com/catalog/pl...ep-p-3698.html
I've found the only thing that works on these cheap a** warped,
plastic valve covers is clean the
suffices with a solvent that will not leave a residue. I use alcohol,
gasoline is a no-no. I don't use a gasket, especially if I'm trying to
save an old cover. I lay a bead of that blue silicone about the size of
a 1/4" rope in the middle of the gasket area and smear just
enough around each of the bolt holes. Then ease it down exactly on to
the right position, first time, no sliding, or you've wasted your time.
Maybe do a dry practice first.
If you convert to aluminum, here's a six write up:
