Sounds to me like the sector gear is worn out. It has its tightest
tolerance when it is centored and is the sloppiest at full turn and
sound sounds like it is worn to the point that it is skipping. I doubt
it is U joint because it would not cause alignement error and it would
feel sloppy straight ahead. Do not drive vehicle until you replace
steering box. It is 18 years old and they do wear out.

and the steering rod. On one side of the u-joint was a pinch bolt onto
the steering column and on the other side was a rubber joint of some
sort that looks like it could move back and forth. When I turn the
steering wheel this was where the slipping was happening. I couldn't
get it any closer together or farther apart and I can't tell how this
union works...Any suggestions?

The steering wheel alignment is adjusted via the drag link:
http://www.bc4x4.com/chrisw/projects...ap/frtdark.jpg that connects the
box to the tie rod. You may have a really, really loose pitman arm on the
box spline. DON'T drive it!
