89 Wrangler Steering Problem
I have an 89 Wrangler with tilt wheel and manual transmission. When I
turn the wheels all the way to the right or left, the steering wheel can continue to spin, causing misalignment of the steering wheel. What is the problem and how do I fix it? Thanks |
Re: 89 Wrangler Steering Problem
There is a joint in the middle of the steering column. Check that it is
tight. If the steering wheel turns after the tires hit the turn stops, I'd be very concerned that the steering wheel may turn while the tires remain wherever they are currently aimed. It seems to me that this may pose a problem for you and others nearby. <matt@skabrewing.com> wrote in message news:1178499307.076680.42280@o5g2000hsb.googlegrou ps.com... >I have an 89 Wrangler with tilt wheel and manual transmission. Thanks Sounds to me like the sector gear is worn out. It has its tightest tolerance when it is centored and is the sloppiest at full turn and sound sounds like it is worn to the point that it is skipping. I doubt it is U joint because it would not cause alignement error and it would feel sloppy straight ahead. Do not drive vehicle until you replace steering box. Re: 89 Wrangler Steering Problem
So, I went to check it out and I found the linkage between the column
and the steering rod. On one side of the u-joint was a pinch bolt onto the steering column and on the other side was a rubber joint of some sort that looks like it could move back and forth. When I turn the steering wheel this was where the slipping was happening. I couldn't get it any closer together or farther apart and I can't tell how this union works...Any suggestions? Re: 89 Wrangler Steering Problem
The steering wheel alignment is adjusted via the drag link:
http://www.bc4x4.com/chrisw/projects...ap/frtdark.jpg that connects the box to the tie rod. You may have a really, really loose pitman arm on the box spline. DON'T drive it! I'm thinking that it's a pinch bolt on both sides.

Re: 89 Wrangler Steering Problem
It's not a pinch bolt on the wheel side(There is a pinch bolt on the
column side). It has an interior flexible rubber boot with a metal exterior that connects to the u-joint. Because of the rubber coupling, I can flex it back and forth a 1/2"+-. Thanks for any suggestions. BTW, I put a 3" body lift on it. It looks as if that might have caused the steering rod(?) to expand to accomodate the lift...
Re: 89 Wrangler Steering Problem
A 3" body lift, DUH! You have stretched the steering column due to the lift.
There are straps and such under the dash board to secure the steering column. Perhaps you can release these bolts to allow the steering column to slide towards the steering box and close the gap in the joint. Thanks for the info....Still more questions though...
Is that going to solve the slippage? How does that joint work? Obviously, my steering wheel will now be 3" closer. What do I need to do to correct this?
