There should be a flexible down tube that ends by the starter.

Re: 87 YJ Firewall vent or hose. What is it?
Yep, and with the end broken off, there is some chance that you could be
sucking exhaust or other fumes back into the passenger compartment. I would
recommend buying a new one, for whatever exhorbitant price the dealer wants
for it. I can't really think of a way to make a replacement. The special
end, that is supposed to let water out, but nothing back in, is the hard
part. Maybe it's not that expensive at the stealership...

sucking exhaust or other fumes back into the passenger compartment. I would
recommend buying a new one, for whatever exhorbitant price the dealer wants
for it. I can't really think of a way to make a replacement. The special
end, that is supposed to let water out, but nothing back in, is the hard
part. Maybe it's not that expensive at the stealership...

One way valve or check valve, but 1 3/4" .. possibly a marine store
purge/drain valve? They make smaller check valves for engine vac systems
how much does it really have to flow?

The only thing that I have ever seen, that even comes close, is the rubber
drain or manual purge valve, that you will see on farm equipment or truck
air cleaner canisters. If I really wanted to make one, I think that I would
start with a mountain bike inner tube. The size isn't so much related to
questions of flow, as it is to the pieces of dust, leaves, and other junk
what will inevitably collect in the air box, and wash into the tube. I
discovered after owning the Wrangler for a year or two, that "maintenance"
of this item consists of pinching the end, so that these bits come out. I
don't think that it is mentioned in the manual anywhere. It is just
something you think of, when you see the drain tube.
