Wade, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I also live in NC. My Jeep
is a '76 CJ5 so it has already passed the 25 year mark. Technically
from what I've read you do have to have the factory emissions stuff in
place like you said. From what I've experienced, though, I'm not too
worried about it. The last time I took my old '63 VW bug in to be
inspected, the inspector initially told me that he didn't want to
inspect it because he knew it wouldn't pass. When I asked him why he
said that, he told me (I swear I'm not making this up) "It don't even
got no cadillac converter on it!" Oh gosh. I've got a set of headers
on order for my Jeep right now and I plan on putting a split-plane
Edelbrock intake and a Holley Avenger truck carb when funds allow for
it. The plan is to just put an air-cleaner on top of the carb that
looks kinda-sorta "stock" when I go to get it inspected and maybe rig
up something in 5 minutes or so that looks "emissions-control-like"
for the inspectors to glance at. Most of them around where I live are
teenage kids who don't know a <sic> cadillac converter from a
glasspack muffler. Good luck with your inspection. I recommend you
take it to Jiffy Lube... ;-) The "J Team" is the way to go. *cough
cough*
