Oil or ATF leaking that is spraying back onto the muffler or catalytic
converter which is cooking it off?

Does your 98 have the aluminum heat shield over the catalic converter
attached to the body? My 96 didn't but my 99 does. If not you may want to
get one. (not the shield on the converter it's self)
