1997 TJ 181 FBI front axle == Dana 30?

My 1997 TJ service manual says the stock front axle is an 181 FBI.

Is that what the rest of the universe calls a Dana 30?

That's what the bean counters and engineers call it. Everyone else calls it
a D30.

OK, great.

Now one more question:

To change the ring and pinion from 3.07 to 3.73, do I need a different case
(aka carrier)?

I belive so. AFAIK, D30 and D35 carriers go from 2.73ish to 3.54 and 3.55 to
5.13
