1997 TJ 181 FBI front axle == Dana 30?

My 1997 TJ service manual says the stock front axle is an 181 FBI.

Is that what the rest of the universe calls a Dana 30?

Re: 1997 TJ 181 FBI front axle == Dana 30?

That's what the bean counters and engineers call it. Everyone else calls it
a D30.

OK, great.

Now one more question:

To change the ring and pinion from 3.07 to 3.73, do I need a different case
(aka carrier)?

I belive so. AFAIK, D30 and D35 carriers go from 2.73ish to 3.54 and 3.55 to
5.13

Does mean I can just change my ring gear to change my 3.55s to 3.73s?

DANA 35 7.56" AXLE RATIO and tooth count:
gear ratio ring gear-to-pinion teeth
3.07 43-14
3.31 43-13
***********(carrier change here)***********
3.55 39-11
3.73 41-11
4.11 37-9

The rear is definitely a Dana 35 unit. not a 44. I replaced a collision-
damaged Dana 35 3.07 with a donor Dana 35 that I was told is 3.73. It's
something different because the speedometer is way off now.

Here's the donor I bought and installed:

Which means it was also available in the D30 ...

If I recall correctly, the 3.73 gears came with the automatic transmission.
