Which is why Macs are upgrading to Intel hardware? Chances are the
OP bought a clone computer. Such computers sell so much cheaper than
your Mac by 'forgetting' to include many functions that are required
by the Intel architecture.
Unfortunately, many who then build these clone computers have so
little grasp as to 'shotgun'. For example, it must be an interrupt
conflict. Or it must be a disk drive.
Meanwhile, responsible computer manufacturers include comprehensive
hardware diagnostics with the machine. Apple that also uses the
same Intel hardware also provides diagnostics. Then people who fix
such machines need not shotgun - try this and replace that until
something might be working.
I'm looking at so many responses to Jeff Strickland that are not
based in knowledge of computers. Too many clone computer promoters
have never even seen a comprehensive hardware diagnostic - don't even
know how few hardware items can create Jeff's problem. So they
shotgun.
Jeff - provided are simple and first steps that anyone with
fundamental knowledge would recommend. As even with the Mac, first
identify the problem before 'fixing' anything. Until you have numbers
from the power supply 'system' (a same 'system' found in Macs), then
you have no idea what is bad and is good.

Are upgrading? That boat sailed a long time ago.
The fundamental problem isn't hardware. Sure you can buy PC junk, but
if you have a reputable brand built with good components, the hardware
isn't the problem.
It's just bad code.

The problem is hardware. Where code is involved, the code is now
shared by PC and Macs.
If buying a clone computer, then important code is missing:
comprehensive hardware diagnostics. Better computers come with free
and comprehensive diagnostics that boot and execute without adding
complexity of an Operating System - Windows, Linux, or OSX.
