The traction control is always on when you hit the button in 2H or 4H it disables it But not fully as explained only shuts off fully in 4H or by doing the steering wheel dance

When you press the button, and the icon is on your dashboard, the system is turned off. You will get more wheel spin. If the icon is not on your dashboard, the system is turned on, it will kick in if wheel spin is detected and slow the tire down. Hope this helps

The ESP saved my bacon when I owned a Dodge Nitro (never, ever buy one). Coming around a cornder, in the winter, I started to slide out of control, and the ESP kicked in. Cut the power to the affected wheels, and I avoided hitting the merridian. I cant see the value in off roading though.

you dont need to use the traction control(ESP) the jeep uses it for you, in 2H or 4H it will automatically engage the brake on the spinning wheel to give the other more power to prevent skidding.The little car with skid marks flashes on your display to let you know its engaged and you'll probably feel the jeep bog down a little. In 4H you can press the ESP button to partially disable the traction control which will prevent the esp from engaging the brakes to prevent wheel spin up to 40MPH or if a sudden change in direction occurs,the little car with skid marks will stay lit when partially off . the benefit to this is if you are wheeling in mud or playing in snow you can disable it so you CAN have wheel spin which is what you want in a mud hole.In 4L it automatically disables ESP fully, there also is a manual way to shut it off completely with a steering wheel dance,button pushing, ignition switching kinda thing.hope this helps.

The below info is from the 2010 Wrangler Owners Manual
Traction Control System (TCS)
This system monitors the amount of wheel spin of each of
the driven wheels. If wheel spin is detected, brake
pressure is applied to the slipping wheel(s) to provide
enhanced acceleration and stability. A feature of the TCS
system functions similar to a limited slip differential and
controls the wheel spin across a driven axle. If one wheel
on a driven axle is spinning faster than the other, the
system will apply the brake of the spinning wheel. This
will allow more engine torque to be applied to the wheel
that is not spinning. This feature remains active even if
TCS and ESP are in either the “Partial Off” or “Full Off”
modes. Refer to “ESP (Electronic Stability Program)” in
this section.

Kinda reminds me of that starship Enterprise - lots of flashing lights and neat to watch the colors and patterns...so something has got to be going on! So just ignore it and giver more gas! Lol.

I also have a rubicon and it does have the esp and i was always under the impression that it was the motor that cuts some power and not the brakes at least that how most older cars used to work

The research I've done indicated that the braking system slows down the faster spinning wheel , not the engine. This would make sense , as you would be applying power to get yourself moving in a low traction situation .

When you press the button and the light comes on on the dash the traction control system is disabled partially but the stability control system is still active. In 4H the button can be pressed for 5 seconds or so to disable (fully?) both systems. Then you can spin around corners and control the jeep rather than it controlling you!!
