Traction control system
 

Hi folks. I have a 2010 Unlimited. It's my first Jeep. I don't know much about the traction control feature. My manual doesn't say much. When engaged, does it slow the faster spinning wheel(s) via a computer/sensors ? I'd like to know how it basically works before I really need to use it. Thanks for any help.

Good question Hiwa I'm in the same boat, I had it in 4 low the other day and the traction light came on in the dash could use some in put about all this myself. hopeing to get some intell.

Same here. What does the switch on the panel do besides turn the light on the dash and when are you supposed to use it? I looked through the manual and as stated, there isn't any information about it

From what my jeep- owning neighbor told me , it slows the faster spinning wheel ( the one that is slipping) so the other wheels pull more. I'm not sure about this, that's why I posted the question. I suppose it's used in slippery ( ie. Icy) conditions. ) I guess I'll play with it in an icy parking lot to check it out. It did help prevent fish-tailing down loose gravel country roads when I drove agressively.

The Traction Control on the Sahara (and possibly the "X") uses the ABS sensors to detect wheel spin and then applys the brake to that wheel to help transfer power to the wheel with traction.
The Rubicon (which I have) does not have this feature as it has the capability of locking the differential to drive each wheel the same.
(I assume that the new "sport" trim version has the same traction control that the Sahara has)

Thanks for the reply tunes. That gives us fellas a better idea of how it works. I do have the sport trim model (4dr.) It's gonna be useful come Edmonton winters, since they do a crap job of plowing our roads. One of the reasons I bought a Jeep !

The ESP or Traction control does limit the amount of wheel spin or slippage when either in 2 wheel or 4Hi utilizing the ABM sensors on all 4 corners.

If you press the ESP button it will slow the computer's reaction time, however it doesn't shut the system off.... In 4Hi the ESP is a little more forgiving and won't engage as quickly as it does when in 2 wheel drive as the computer has been configured for using 4 wheel drive in conditions where wheel slippage is expected...

The best part of the system is that in 4Lo the ESP is currently shut off/disengaged.

you dont need to use the traction control(ESP) the jeep uses it for you, in 2H or 4H it will automatically engage the brake on the spinning wheel to give the other more power to prevent skidding.The little car with skid marks flashes on your display to let you know its engaged and you'll probably feel the jeep bog down a little. In 4H you can press the ESP button to partially disable the traction control which will prevent the esp from engaging the brakes to prevent wheel spin up to 40MPH or if a sudden change in direction occurs,the little car with skid marks will stay lit when partially off . the benefit to this is if you are wheeling in mud or playing in snow you can disable it so you CAN have wheel spin which is what you want in a mud hole.In 4L it automatically disables ESP fully, there also is a manual way to shut it off completely with a steering wheel dance,button pushing, ignition switching kinda thing.hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Slight confusion though. When I press the button ,does it turn it on in 2h and 4h or is it disabaling the function?. I'm presuming when I press the button and I see the icon on the dash, it's engaged in 2h and 4h. I now understand it doesn't work in 4L ( which we don't want it to)
