Thinking about newer JK - oil consumption
We currently have a 97 Jeep TJ, are thinking of buy a newer 4 dr Sahara or Rubicon, we've heard the oil consumption is excessive, is this of concern? We are new to this site and would appreciate any help or advice.
Welcome to the site! And yes the 3.8L has a reputation of excessiive oil consumption. Its not just in the JK, its common in other vehcials that shared this motor, IE the Caravan. Google it, you will find a tone of info on it. I have a JKU 2008 and I was an oil burner, I worked with my dealer did the consumption test ect...and I was covered under warranty, the dealer makes a difference, in my case the guys did a awsome job! Most of the burners were 07 and o8's with the finger pointed at motors built in Mexico...rings installed upside down or incorectly. Some a simple PCV replacment does the trick, others not a single issue.
If I were looking to by a used one, I;'d error on the side of caution, and try and get all the maintence logs/paper work you can. I'd be very frank with the seller and let them know you know all about this issue and want to know the vehical history. Extended power train warranty.
If at all possible dive the JK for a week, take a base line on the oil on the dipstick, then put 700 or 1000 kms on it. If its' a burner, with this amount of KMs it not uncommon to burn 450mL! Honestly!
Best of luck

Not all 3.8 have the problem AAMOF there is a very small percentage that do, but that would be a reason for someone to sell or trade in. The 3.6 also have their issues. Being aware of the possible problems makes you and informed buyer. Ask the questions before you buy..
