First Time Offroad

First Time Offroad
Went offroad today, a small road. According to OF4WD a 1+ road so I wasn't to worried, saw a few people on the trail. Surprised the jeep in 4wd 2nd gear just buttered through everything without skipping a beat, and some of the ruts were 6 - 8 inches deep in some spots. It's not very far at all, around 15 minutes from whitby it's near "the pitts" but I know that is private property, we even stopped and took a photo of it there are TONS of signs posted so you know not to go there.
Biggest disappointment was we saw alot of garbage some places even evidence of burning of there garbage, just makes me sad that people don't respect the land. We got a little dirty, but we didn't storm any puddles even tho there was one that go up over the bumper. Took it slow first time out, would definitely go again. Only 1 hour hump from scarbrough, so it's not out of the way.

Re: First Time Offroad
I did see 3 other vehicles on the trail so it is a fairly traveled trail. There is also another trail up the road I was looking at "wild turkey rd" and was going to run it aswell, I am never "alone" i always have my girl in my passenger seat she enjoys the runs also.
I might go again today or tomorrow or maybe next week.

Took a similar "miss" adventure on my way through the Upper Penn of Michigan on the way home from Montana. Was doing some side road sightseeing and was almost back to the main highway (#2) when I came across a trail off the side that was posted "No winter Maintanance". In my world, those signs actually read "I dare you" Off we went, the road quickly petered out from gravel to a packed trail and appeared to be leading us through a reforestation area. Nothing on the trail even remotely required 4X4, so I had never engaged it - a near fatal mistake. The towering pines suddenly gave way to 6-7 foot christmas tree sized ones - and a SAND ridge. Sand and mud tired are not a forgiving combo. I slammed her into first and mashed the petal in hopes of keeping up enough momentum to keep moving and not digging. Problem was the trail had more bends then a spazming snake, what was around them completely blocked by the trees. Luck held and we cleared the ridge only to have it drop into a beaver grass meadow. For those who are north woods savy, beaver grass only grows in soggy areas and that was definitely NOT good - still being in two wheel drive. Luck still held, or should I say the grass did, and there was a small bridge across the creek that was providing this meadow the water. We went flying across and up the ridge on the other side only to be confronted by the trail evapourating away to a notch in the trees with "Posted" and "No trespassing" signs. I could see on the GPS there was a REAL road not more then 50 yards straight ahead so since there was no way to turn back, I yelled "Cowabunga" and went for it. There trees were so close the windshield, it was almost completely blocked by their leaves, so we were pretty much going by feel alone!. 25 feet we crested the hill and come flying out into... some guy's BACKYARD! Zipped between his pool and picknick table, out his driveway to the the road and never looked back!

Re: First Time Offroad
That sounds like the scariest ---- ever, I tend to pop 4wd whenever I feel like the road could be loose anything. When we did this trail we saw some loose dirt as soon as I was off the paved road and I clunked er into 4x4. Never used low range, but still I guess I tend to stay safer. I don't know what I would do if I broke my rig, the entire trail I pretty much stayed 2nd gear around 1300rpms just crawling through the entire thing.

Sounds like a Harold and Kumar movie....sounds like fun times.
I am hoping to find the location of your trail if and when I get membership and when I do, I will probably head out there either this Sunday or next Sunday. I would go on a weekday, but work is a PITA.

Re: First Time Offroad
Never wheeling alone means to have more than one truck. Not just another person. If you get stuck somewhere it could be a long walk back.
The next time you want to try something let me know. I work shift work so I have days off on various days.
