2012 Sahara unlimited. Deep cherry red with tan interior dual tops w/ body coloured hard top. All the options as well. Have not heard back on a delivery date yet. Can't wait!

 

Just to add to the previous note,

This my first jeep. I live in Toronto and would like to take advantage of some local off-roading fun. Nothing too extreme obviously since it is not a Rubicon. I may look at some minor mods over time. My main reasons for a jeep.

1) a vehicle that is fun to drive and is solidly built
2) get to my favourite fishing spots which can not be accessed by cars or small SUV's
These spots are usually abandoned logging roads and sometimes worse.

Looking forward to all the great info and advice in these forums.

When I was test driving the Jeep with my wife she noticed other jeep owners were waving.
When she asked why I just said 'it's a long story'. She now thinks jeep ownership is
some sort of cult. That's ok, she has her own vehicle.

Welcome in the club! It's my first jeep too and I wonder why it took me so long to buy one!! BTW, by saying 'nothing too extreme' in off-roading, you'd be surprised what a Wrangler X could do so don't worry in front of obstacles :)

So based on the trailfest 1-8 difficulty rating, what would the stock Sahara unlimited be able to do? Lets assume I have some offload experience but no formal 'training' and I would prefer not to break anything. What would a stock Rubicon be capable of?

Ordered it on Monday and I have yet to hear back!

I am not familiar with the trailfest rating. The link provided by Rdrsjeep is a effectively a good rating guide. It is pretty much a matter of ride height (suspension and body lift) that needs to be consider at all time before taking your decision to face a trail. What I mean is of course the stock jeep won't be able to overcome higher rocks or fallen trees on the ground. Then, the mud is another type of challenge that could be easier to go through with a Rubi since the truelock system is not available on a stock sahara. Don't get me wrong, any jeep can succeed in the mud but your choice of tire will definitely help a lot. Another thing which is very important is the speed, some dummy will try to go too fast in trail, the Wrangler is NOT a Baja 1000 vehicle!!! The angle you will face your obstacle and the more than often slow motion pace is the key for not breaking anything on your machine.

Don't go alone on harder trails and if you can afford a professional training which in my point of view is an investment, do it. Your rides will be more enjoyable and less stress inducing!

Thanks for the input. Makes a lot of sense. I am mainly interested in getting to my fav' fishing spots which are not very accessible (and finding new ones). I have shredded my current SUV on the roads/trails to get there over the years. Ball joints, CV cups, axles, struts, you name it, I have broken it. Last year my exhaust from the manifold back was ripped off, my brothers oil pan was trashed and we finally made it to the lake In our buddies new Ram. So I am looking forward to fishing this summer without having to worry about making it back out. I would like to get some proper instruction and do some moderate trails as well. My Sahara will be a daily driver and in my line of work I need something that looks decent so I won't be doing any radical mods to it.
